Another practical purpose that the concept of a rail guns could be put to use for is launching things into space. Instead of costly shuttle or rocket launches every time you want to put something into orbit, you could use a electromagnetic launcher to accelerate your payload to beyond the escape velocity of objects on earth. The escape speed for an object onthe earth happens to be 11.2 km/s. Notice that the escape velocity does not depend on the mass of the object.
The mass of the object does, however, affect the amount of current that is needed to accelerate an object to beyond the escape velocity. The amount of current needed to launch say, a automated shuttle into orbit would be enormous. However, in theory even this task should be possible. This idea of an electromagnetic launcher used for space travel would be even more plausible for use on an astronomical body that has a low gravity environment. It could be very useful for example, if you used conventional (fuel combustion) methods to get a probe to an asteroid or moon, and then due to low gravity conditions were able to with one burst of energy launch the probe back to earth.
