Some objects which hit Earth's atmosphere brake up before getting close
to the surface of Earth, while others impact the surface. Even just in
sunlight, some outgas and some don't. Some don't outgas for years, and then
do. This sounds more complex than ice bergs to me. I agree that we will
know more in 10 years, but it is possible that we will find small asteroids
as a group are more complex and varied than we think now. Some "soft"
objects in space may not be strong enough to allow even low powered ion
engines to push them around.
An earlier comment was made that a mission back to the Moon might cost a
$ billion. Given the mass available there, the price per ton is a better
buy than for small asteroids. Not that I am opposed to going after
asteroids, I just still think the Moon is a better bet. But this group
should be large and diverse enough to discuss both, and for now I am on the
lunar side.
