(did I miss something here?) It seems that you have missed something huge, but so have many other people who have been left in the dark by "respected astronomers".
In light of the reminder by Mike, a co-moderator of this list, that this forum is for discussing "subjects related to SSI research", I will be very brief and point you to books and websites to start you off.
Were there planetary collisions between Mars and Venus in c. 1500 BC, and other periods before then?
Velikovsky provided copious historical, geological, and astronomical evidence for the thesis that not only did this occur, but that it occurred near enough to Earth to have cataclysmic consequences on this planet, which were recorded in ancient documents and found in geological samplings.
To pique your curiosity: Why have not references to Venus been found in any records prior to c1500 BC? Is it because Venus was not in the same orbit then as it is now? Why did Mars gain prominence in records post c1500 BC when it was barely mentioned in prior periods?
To read Velikovsky's answers these and a myriad of other fascinating enigmas, begin with his 1950 book, _Worlds in Collision_, which sparked a heated public debate and controversy that lasted decades, with attempts by "respected astronomers" to suppress the book's publication and discussion. Other many books by him include: _Ages in Chaos_, _Earth in Upheaval_, and his last book, _Stargazers and Gravediggers_, which is his memoirs of the "respected astronomers" reaction to _Worlds in Collision_.
Books written about Velikovsky's work include: _Velikovsky Reconsidered_ and _The Age of Velikovsky_.
