The book, "Rare Earth: Why Complex Life is Uncommon in the Universe" by P. Ward and D. Brownlee, (Sprfinger-Verlag, 2000) both scientists, makes the case stated in the title. The review on Amazon.com is accurate. The failure of radio and optical SETI is consistent with this, but of course not proof. It is a good read. Sincerely, Jay Huebner; jhuebn@...
