Actually, there's been a minor breakthrough recently.
They've significantly increased the stability. Apparently
it requires very good symmetry to keep the containment.

It's now probably only 15-30 years away; but its still a dirty
technology, and it still looks as if its going to produce a lot of
radioactive stuff with relatively long half lifes (tens of decades
atleast.)

But they insist that it is important to continue,
as they have for the last what, ~50 years?
