The irony is only apparent, not real. In the essay,
"Apollo 11", Rand discussed
in detail the issue of government involvement in space
programs: that there
shouldn't be any, that the actual achievements are
due, not to government,
but to the scientists, engineers, managers, etc., and
that all current
functions of government should be privatized except
for the police, courts,
and national defence.

My excerpts were intended to focus on the
moral-philosophical significance
of the movement into space.

Thanks, though, for noticing the apparent irony.

The great irony here is that Rand's philosophy
vigorously opposed

the kind of big government program that was
the heart of the

Apollo effort. A huge collection of government
employees slaving
away

for the common good - where is John Galt in
all this? - nowhere.

>>> Our goverment should be praised for reseach for
funding of space program, without goverment
involement, we wouldnt have what we have now. 90% of
launch capabilities are performed by civiians and
contractors, plus most of technical training.
