On the Space Shuttle the booster rockets burn about 2 minutes. The main
engines usually are off within 10 minutes of lift-off. At the least (I
would hope) the maglev phase could eliminate the need for boosters on a
somewhat comparable orbiter (with more fuel tanks). If so, then, and if one
was willing to call it that, it might be a maglev/single stage to orbit
(MLSSTO?). Would it save enough to make it worth building the maglev up a
mountain? I don't know, but maybe it could do a little more, but as you
point out, it could not eliminate the chemical/rocket phase for LEO, which
requires, as you rightly point out, a high horizontal velocity component.
Higher vertical velocity components would seem to be useful for modified
trajectories to geosynch and for going to the Moon. And such a device, with
only electricity, hydrogen and oxygen, would seem a lot better
environmentally. Jay Huebner
