Agreed, the question is all wrong. A company decides to build a widget
and then creates a factory to build widgets. They don't build a
factory and then decide that it would be a good factory to build
widgets in.

I agree with you, but you are misunderstanding me. I am not asking what kind of factory we want to build. You wouldn't build the factory and then ask what kind of infrastructure do we need either, would you? Regardless of what product is manufactured or what kind of factory you build, EVERYTHING you do in space will have some requirements in common.
Power Needs
Communication
Protection from space hazards
There may be more, but surely we can all agree that every factory in space will require power, communications capabilities, and some protection from space hazards (solar radiation, meteorites, etc.). Right?
Again, I am not asking about the kind of factory we should build, but the kind of infrastructure we would need to support factories and where and why?
