14.) Complete the 3 tether stations and commence moving them into
their respective orbits.
. a.) The LEO orbit is at 484 km with a period of 94.2857 minutes.
. b.) The MEO orbit is at 18,732 km with a period of 660 minutes.
. c.) The Lunavator with its center of gravity in an orbit of 246.2
km above the lunar surface and has a period of 132 minutes.
process of moving them into the respective orbits begins. A number
of those Orbital Transfer Vehicles are now dedicated to this task.
The timing and precision involved in the synchronization of the
tethers' orbits will be impressive.
I've determined that by placing each tether in the orbits I quote
above that they'll move in synchronicity and that the travel time of
the payload from tether to tether will be uniform. I believe the
challenge will be in placing each tether at a very particular point
in the orbit so that a payload arriving towards the tether doesn't
just intersect its orbit, doesn't just come near to the tether, but
actually intersects the grapple of the tether, and does this
repeatedly.
I sure hope that this is technologically feasible! I've just been
working on the theory aspect of it. This is my leap of technological
faith. Of course, I've presumed that enough testing of the science
and engineering has already taken place :) Even if it is set up to
work, what effect will the movement of the LEO tether to
occasionally avoid space junk have on the accuracy, the mismatching
of payload masses, the perturbations of the lunar orbit that can't
be fine-tuned away by mass balancing.
Can anyone fill in the blanks for me? I take solace from the comment
in the movie "Apollo 13" where they say that they had the accuracy
of firing an envelope through a mail slot from 25,000 miles away :)
Hopefully we can do that repeatedly. I'd sure hate to have to haul
tons of equipment to the moon with rockets.
