that have departments doing similar things, and you bring down labor costs. We
also wanted to stick with off the shelf technology. We didn't want to reinvent
anything that could be done with what is currently available. We did talk to an
engineer at Orbital who said that because we were using solar Lagrangian orbits,
solar panels would supply more than enough power for a traditional radio
telescope, and that each telescope should weigh around 200lbs. minus fuel to get
to it the prescribed orbits.
Also keep in mind that the main reason that I threw it out there was perhaps
someone subscribing to this list (and reading the postings, there a number of
people with the intellectual if not financial ability to do this) might find a
way to make it work for them, especially since the topic has been hot in the
discussions of late. My goal in developing the business plan was to be able to
do something my wife and I could do together (she's the physicist, my degrees
are in other areas) and to find a way from a business point of view that
commercial development of space could yield a reletively immediate return on
investment because in reality, that's the only way it will happen. We have
dissolved the company so profiting from the idea is no longer a main goal.
Finding a way to kickstart the industry is.
