than anything that human beings have ever built, then you probably can also
build humongous air filters that will catch all the crap floating in the
atmosphere. Once a filter is full, it is replaced and the old one is burnt in
a solar furnace like all the rest of the waste. A similar treatment could be
applied to water.
As I always say, I think that life in a space colony will be maintained more
by industrial rather than ecosystemic/natural processes.
By the way, interestingly some big buildings on Earth are in some ways moving
toward a "space colony"-like architecture, with partial water recycling and
solar heaters...
