Science magazine, the most widely quoted and referenced science magazine in the world, has an article, One Nuclear Leap to Mars?, which recounts the history of the Soviet efforts to develop nuclear powered spacecraft for a Mars trip. Science, Vol. 301, pages 906-9, 15 Aug. 2003. I recommend it for a good discussion of some of the real problems of such a long trip. Jay Huebner
