For a generation or so, since the Club of Rome report,(?) we've been
told that we should do more with less.
increasinly wanting 3 cars. HAH!

This means bigger garages to house the cars, which means more old
growth forests are cut down, more oil refined for the asphalt
shingles, more paint for the siding, etc, etc.
Average energy use in a household is now up to 1,350 kW/h per month.

Hmm, it doesn't seem that the message has taken hold too well and
other countries are following the same trends of conspicious
consumption.
Time for SPS to have its day in the Sun. We'll probably see that
happen before we change the consumerist ethos that drives the
economies and desires/aspirations of people around the world.
