It's just a massive UPS system. One of the companies I was involved
with had a $750,000 UPS system capable of handling critical
industrial processes in the event of grid failure.

If you can do without the need for 100% reliable power supply and
steady voltage then you can save yourself a lot of money in your
home.

I'm happy enough to live with 99.97% reliability and stable voltage
tht I get from my utility and save myself thousands of dollars.

You'll note that the article doesn't advocate doing away with the
grid, just methods to improve reliability.
