Summing up a Green position on SSPS

Those are IMHO all very real issues, and dismiss them as a communist plot is
just an incredibly irresponsible and extremist position.
Sure, some so-called environmentalist group and individuals are deranged, as
there are extremists deranged positions in any aspect of human life, but
ignoring the environmental issue posed by industrialization and population
growth on global scale is just hiding the head under the sand. I very much
hope it will be possible to find technological solutions at least to some of
these issues, and indeed SPS IMHO would be a very good start, but let's not
forget that these solution must be imposed on a very reluctant profit-driven
economy that tries in every way to avoid to face expensive responsibilities.
As for Europe, having lived both in US and in Europe, I can assure you that
the quality of life in the old continent is much higher, and if that is a
result of a communist plot I'd suggest you to start one ASAP in the States
as well... :)
Unfortunately the environmental situation in Europe is much worse than in
the US, but that is only because the much higher relative population density
on the territory, if you do the proper proportions the US are devastating
the environment to an extent that makes European issues pale by comparison,
and can only afford to do so because the territory is so much larger
compared to the population it has to sustain. In other words, the current US
model of growth is not sustainable, and that is bad news unless you start to
worry about it and plan for the future, which is exactly what
environmentalism is about. Now I certainly agree that the solutions are much
more likely to be found in technology and research, and that returning to
middle age is not an option, but disagreeing with solutions doesn't make the
issues disappear unfortunately. The problems are real and ignoring them for
short term profit is not going to do any good to anyone, except to those who
make the short term profit that is. (timber lobbies anyone?)
Bottom line, I think environmentalists, or green movements if you prefer,
are a very good and positive force, and if someone is strumentalizing some
of them and generally preaching utopical "returns to nature" then the right
thing to do surely should be to propose viable acceptable alternatives (like
SPS) and not dismiss them all as socialists fanatics.
