Athese going to be space settlers' best friends?

My point was that there are other ways to obviate the need for robotic
assistants (assistance? :) ) Also, because of this, and the ever practical
nature of actual military leaders (on the ground and carrying the stuff), I
doubt that we can count on any significant funding from the military to
develop this type of technology.

One further thought: looking at the problem from a worst case scenario
perspective (just as an infantry platoon sergeant would), when one is
deploying personnel in an extremely hostile environment (moon, mars,
exvehicular SPS activity), it is discomforting to know that your
survivability depends on a complex, extra device. The KISS formula would
certainly be in effect in these scenarios, I would imagine.
