New Traditions

What do you think we'll expect to see in the way of new traditions
and lifestyles at the first orbital camps, and later in permanent
Habitats?

Here are a few examples that come quickly to mind:

"Ninety percent of our crew were Pollywogs, (that is a person who
has not crossed the equator). We knew that we were all in for a good
hazing. All of our Chief and First Class Petty Officers were
Shellback. Most of them had served on the battleships that went down
at Pearl Harbor. Tradition was a big thing with them."

"This is the 300 club. At Pole, it will generally reach -100 F on
the thermometer several times each winter. When this happens, they
will fire up the sauna to 200 F. The idea is to stand inside the
sauna as long as you can stand it then walk out to the Pole itself
and back....wearing nothing but shoes. Thus, a 300 degree
temperature swing."

And for us jaded, and fearful, Westerners, this might be the most
bizarre (although I really hope it isn't!)
