I see what you're getting at, but only if we stretch the definition
of *social* beyond it's common meaning so that it includes
activities that are absent interaction with others.

Salary, promotion, status, what you can do with your salary, and
career are powerful motivators that come from the commercial world.

The leader, or manager, of volunteers needs to find substitutes for
many of the attributes above. After a while I came to think of my
volunteers activities as *management through persuasion* because I
had no inherent authority to manage.

If there is to be a space activity that is reliant on volunteers it
will need to be structured in a completely different fashion than
comerical enterprises.

I'm under the impression that Armadillo Aerospace is a volunteer
effort, but with a very small group of enthusiasts who are all
dedicated to the project. If this is indeed correct, then they are a
special subset of what I'm referring to. They don't rely on a lot of
talent and they are all self-motivating and probably don't need a
*leader* much at all.
