The plug-in hybrids are a good idea. It reminds me, though, of the early
days of steam ships. Did you ever notice that all those very early
ocean-going steamships also had masts for sails? Because, you see, those
early steam boilers and mechanical links were liable to break down and
leave you stranded, if you didn't have a good set of sails to get you home!

I.e. in the early phases of a new technology, it's not unusual to have
reliability problems that make hybrid (dual-technology) implementations
a practical solution. But eventually the new technology gets good enough
to work all by itself.... It seems pretty clear battery-powered/plug-in
electric vehicles are the long-term solution.
