Has anyone seriously looked at making fiberglass & glass from Mars
regolith? Can anyone refer me to a study on that?

Also, any references for reasonable binders ('epoxy') for fiberglass
which could be made on Mars from the CO2 or plant byproducts?

Goldsworthy and others at past SSI conferences proposed fiberglass
from various Lunar minerals. But, I do not remember studies related
to Mars, which has a slightly different abundance of minerals,
more iron, for example.

One plan for Luna was to use glass-glass composites, due to the
shortage of carbon and hydrogen. The fibers would be glass with
a high melting point. It would be layered with powdered glass
with a low melting point, then heated to bind them together.

Mars has abundant carbon, so we can use more conventional composites,
but they have to be made from scratch (CO2 + H2O), or from by
products of food growth.

I am asking because we are starting a project to identify technologies
to build an economical, growing Mars Base built primarily with local
materials. And, then build some prototype equipment. Send a private
reply if you are interested in detailed discussion of Mars construction,
or send to everyone on this ssi_list if you have information
applicable to both Mars construction and the Lunar & asteroid which
SSI is more typically interested in.
