when he said that in the short term (a few years), an accelerating or
exponential rate of change means things appear to be barely moving, but
in the long term (a few decades) all the changes add up and interact to
produce huge overall changes (like the internet, when it passed some
critical mass stage of general acceptance in the mid 1990s, despite
being used for about two decades before).

My deeper point is that the SSPS vision is planned for a thirty year
time frame from the start -- and while it probably was in the 1970s a
good idea especially if we had it online right now and had space
habitats lots of launches etc right now, if started now in 2004 it faces
IMHO too much competition from these other long term trends to be
economically viable in and of itself. Perhaps SPS will provide that same kind of critical mass with regard to space traffic models which the Internet needed to take off.
