reading Gerry's book, joining SSI in 1977.
meeting Eric Drexler that year, when I was
on leave from the Space Sciences Lab, and
auditing classes at Harvard and MIT.
can't say that I was impressed with Eric -- nose
in the air. though fair to say that he was less than
inspired my casual / honest / open
demeanor ...
and, of course, he is long gone now -- as is
O'Neill.
one of the ubiquities / curiosities of the aerospace
field -- as compared to industries in an open market --
is the non-growth, the stagnation.
as the aerospace marketplace is the dominion
of the world-gangsters, the military-industrial-corporate
state maintaining its high-ground of world domination --
after decades and decades we find still no progress --
no thousands or millions of annual orbital & interplanetary
tourists, immigrants, business people.
'reams' of Hollywood 'cellaphane', yes.
but not yet any reality to our lives -- no 'groundtruth'
in the divine ... our cosmic wilderness.
we are still looking to get our feed 'wet'!
