I must admit that generally I don't get into discussions where Mike takes a
stand, as he almost always says what I would like to have said, and far
better put than mine would have been. However, there have been a number of
times I have simply let things slide that perhaps I should not have. Sorry
guys, but please do forget forever about both the Bernal Sphere and the
Stanford doughnut. Both were shown way back to be such that they would drive
any inhabitants crazy for psychological reasons, in next to no time. The
only one of O'Neill's habitats that really would work is the Island 3.

Now I'm curious, how and when it was shown that all smaller habitats would
drive their inhabitants crazy? I have never heard anything like that before,
and if that's true then space settlements are simply doomed - an Island 3
habitat would conceivably be built only after hundreds of islands 1 and 2
were already in orbit...

Best wishes, Andy.
