Re "Smaller faster orbit"

Seems to me a sufficient increase in speed would simply stop your inward
spiral and circularize [stabilize] your orbit but smaller and faster
implies an increase in gravity to act as a centripetal force.
-once stabilized, any excess speed would result in a larger orbit

You don't want to "increase your orbital speed" directly but rather "tack"
so as to drive your sails inward toward the sun, at a greater rate than your
decaying orbit is doing it. The result is the same but a misunderstanding of
"tactics" :-], -could give the wrong result.i.e., a larger orbit.
