Hello Gary,
I quite agree with you. The presence of metallic hydrogen could also lead to some very interesting magnetic properties and may lead to some fantastic biology. But, I have my doubts as to whether hydrogen would remain metallic because once most of the overlaying gas of the Jovian planet is stripped away the pressures necessary to compress hydrogen into a metallic state would be removed.
One theory postulates that the cores of smaller Jovian planets (Uranus, Neptune), may contain rocky
cores, or cores of highly compressed carbon in the form of diamond. In one of Clarke's novels, I believe it was in 2061: Odyssey 3 this particular theory was mentioned. And over the past couple of months Space.com had an article about Jovian planets with diamond cores.
