Another book in this genre is "A Short History of Progess" by Ronald
Wright. If you follow the logic offered by these authors (Diamond and
Wright), it appears that we are on the slippery slope of a cultural
collapse, which makes the concept of space habitats all the more
appealing. Perhaps as a species, we will need to be threatened with
extinction before we cast off our culturely inspired stupidity.
