"nobody is discussing this in the mainstream" .....

I realize this may not qualify as "mainstream", however I did notice
that Kurzweil touches on SPS breifly in this new book "The Singularity
is Near".

In reviewing recent advances in nanotechnology, he cites that "a recent
analysis of applying nanocrystals to solar-engery conversion indicates
that efficienceis above 60 percent appear to be feasilble. Today, solar
power costs an estimated $ 2.75 per watt. Several companies are
developing manoscale solar cells and hope to bring the cost of solar
powerbelow that of other energy sources. ..... Nanosolar has a design
based on titanium oxide nanoparticles that can be mass-produced on very
thin flexible films. ..... Terresttrial surfaces could be augmented by
huge solar panels in space.
