In space, a curved launch would be more manageable than a straight path.

The object being moved is forced to ride the curve adding greater alignment capability that the engineers can play with and fine-tune and this might give a somewhat slingshot effect allowing for greater momentum/speed, yet at the same time allowing more control over that speed. Sudden G-forces, of course, is always applicable depending on cargo, especially if human.
