For me, getting into space is to solve some of the problems on Earth.

We have endless material and energy ressources there and could get
energy production, production in general and mining off Earth, so that
polluting Earth could be a lot less than without space development.

Also we are running out of raw materials on Earth (just wait another
100 years) and looking for alternatives when we yet have the means to
do so might be a good idea.

You are right that humanity as a whole is very immature and I think
illogical also.

But is trying to solve some of the planets problems in exploiting the
means of space really running away?

If putting our heads into Earth is not running away - it certainly is
to neglect solving some of our problems.

The need for ressources could drive us to conflicts never seen before,
getting those in space could prevent some wars and prevent pollution
of Earth also.

Your are right that we have to change something on Earth especially
about the behavior of humans.
But we do need to open up the High Frontier as well to support our
Earth.

It might be that solving some pressing problems could help to become
more mature and that includes space development.
