If it was just a single message announcing the existence of such a project, criticism would be neither appropriate nor forthcoming. Do you not agree, however, that there is a threshold beyond which this sort of thing does become spam? If you don't, then we disagree. If you do, consider that I logged on and found something like five copies of the same unsolicited commercial email in my mailbox (apparently one per list the guy subscribes to), then ran a quick check in history and found he'd already been extensively regaling several lists with his project, so that anyone interested in it would already have been aware of it. If you don't think that crosses the threshold for something to be called spam, what in your opinion would? (Not a rhetorical question.)
