Sapphire has wonderful tensile strength, is the second hardest
naturally occurring substance (diamond being the very hardest, of
course), and it isn't brittle like diamond. I've wondered if vacuum
vapor deposition could, if one were to squirt out a mix of vaporized
aluminum and oxygen, lay down layers of sapphire.
