That was the general idea, but particle beams degrade
so fast they never reach above the atmosphere. I don't
know if they ever tried to mount some such device an a
space platform. It had to be powered by a mini-nuke to
begin with and that's a bit hard to deploy in orbit,
what with many treaties, etc, plus it's rather
difficult to reload/resupply them,,,

Balistic anti-missles are even less directable in
vacuum. Fins won't work and it's really difficult to
provide enough reaction mass to change directions on a
dime. So our SDI system doesn't work, but we probably
learned a lot by trying,,,

Ah, yes, heavy breathing. Not possible w/o atmosphere.
