DEI Goes to MASS

I started the original Dirigo Energy Institute (DEI) as a nonprofit R&D organization in 1992, was unsuccessful in getting anything going, so shut it down in 2001. I am trying again, this time hitching DEI's star to solving the global warming problem. The symbol of DEI has always been a Power Pyramid to indicate deriving energy from the independent sources of the sun, the atom, and the earth. The sun emphasis was, and continues to be, solar power satellites. To develop this source, DEI will support the efforts of the Space Solar Power Workshop. For the earth, the Power Pyramid previously emphasized geothermal but in this incarnation it is going with the motion of the ocean by promoting a wind-wave converter. This offshore invention uses an outrigger circular array of impellers to create a stable platform on which an eggbeater windmill is affixed with the combination of the impellers and windmill jointly driving a generator to produce electricity. An unsolicited proposal to the DOE is under preparation to develop a five megawatt wind-wave converter and test it offshore in Maine with underwater cables going to power conditioning equipment set up at some appropriate location such as the site of the former Maine Yankee Atomic Power Plant. I was the Site Manager for Combustion Engineering during the startup of Maine Yankee, so this option holds fond memories for me. Stealing a page from the MAD (mutual assured destruction) governmental policies of yore, DEI will seek three independent means to provide energy in an environmentally benign manner in an approach it will refer to as MASS (mutual assured survival systems). Before, DEI was using the atom to promote modular nuclear power plants volume produced in manufacturing facilities such as shipyards. Due to the recent spate of messages from members of this group, DEI has changed its atomic focus to promote Polywell Fusion. I received notification from the State of Maine on 20 July that DEI's application as a nonprofit corporation has been accepted. I just finished a letter writing campaign to two Maine State Representatives, six Maine State Senators, the Governor of Maine, the Maine Congressional Delegation (two Senators and two Representatives), the President of the United States, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations informing them of DEI's programs to solve the global warming problem. I also wanted to send a letter to God but I could not find the most recent mailing address. Perhaps the fact that DEI means God in some circles will be sufficient. Of course, DEI also means Dale Earnhardt Incorporated which, when you come to think about it, is also appropriate in that DEI will be striving mightily to win the race to solve the global warming problem. For the record, I have set up a rudimentary web site at www.lowearthorbitnow.org that expands upon the above concepts but I do notrecommend that anyone visit it. At this time it is nothing but Words, Words, Words but, by the end of the year, I hope to have added Pictures, Pictures, Pictures to make it worth looking at.
