mired in your vision that you can't see all of the deus ex machina
scaffolding you've erected.
OK, let's play your scenario. Let's stick your patent attorney into
orbit. First off, the moment we push him out of the spacecraft's
air-lock, his productivity falls to zero in that he's dead. Secondly,
if he can afford a spacesuit, his productivity still falls to zero
because all he can do is float next to the spacecraft and is
unequipped to process any patent applications. Thirdly, even if he
takes a laptop with him on his journey outside of the spacecraft, what
is his IP address, and where is the domain server for his internet
connectivity?
Western Society, as I wrote above, is layered with an deep
infrastructure which provides many productivity enhancing tools. Walk
out into the Colorado Rockies, or into the swamps of the Amazon, or
onto the tundra of the High Arctic and try to find cell phone
reception, or send an e-mail, or for that matter, try to recharge your
laptop's battery. After a while you might find that your cell phone
makes a good weight to attach to the end of a fishing line, that your
laptop makes a good cutting board, and that your battery's make good
fireworks when thrown into a camp fire.
