Keith, The reason that the future implied in your story will probably not stop the expansion of humanity into space is that, for any of a number of reasons, at least a few will refuse to be tuned out of the real world and these will in time control the real world. It only takes a few. They will expand in numbers while the disembodied do not.Eventually the disembodied will be of little significance -- much like drug addicts today. I felt that way for a number of years.

When the consequence of the singularity finally sunk in, my view shifted.

Now I don't think the true future of humanity lies in the physical
world at all.

Is this good? Is this bad? Who knows?
