Phil Chapman and I have discussed the relative merits of PV and solar
dynamic. I could be convinced either direction depending on how the
cost and availability work out, but have for now come down on the
side of solar dynamic. They would use steam for the bottoming cycle
and either helium or mercury for the toping units. At 60% efficient,
they intercept only 1/4 as much sunlight, but they do require
radiators about as large as the collector area. The heat transfer
pseudo fluid would be made from left over laser reaction mass.
One of the things that concerns me about PV and large exposed
conductors carrying multi GW current and voltage is flashovers when
one is hit with a micro meteorite. A little plasma goes a long way
in starting an arc.
