My understanding of lunar mining is that it's something of a scheme done in miniature. Packets of material launched by linear or rotary electromagnetic mass drivers are the size of softballs, one trailing another by about a half-second. This stream of packets very precisely targets a mass catcher at L-2 for low-energy transport to a solar-fired processing plant, which is in space.

Who cares about spinning planets and tipping backhoes? There are answers and workthroughs to every environment we will deal with.
