> Personally, I prefer underground cities. Guess I'm basically a troglodyte. If the issue is a cold climate, it's true that it would be easier to keep an underground city warm than an above-ground one. But if above ground, and in a transparent enclosure, one could get a super-greenhouse effect on cold yet sunny days. So not only would there be reduced heat transfer, there would be free heating at least part of the time.
And when I stop to think about it further, theremight be advantages if the issue was a hot climate, too. Being underground would get you out of the sun during the day, but in an above-ground enclosure, if you could block the sunlight during the day, but then open up the city to a clear sky at night, there would be more heat flow out of the city.
