Right. The trouble is that technology makes progressively more
destructive power available to the very small percentage of nutballs who
would actually want to use it. At the same time, we become more
dependent on infrastructure, which might break down in the event of a
major disaster. New York City imports about 40 million tons of food per
year, or 100 thousand tons per day [1]. If that flow were to stop,
things would get bad very fast.

This is all the more reason to spread ourselves out quickly -- it would
be much harder for a plague (or any other disaster) to affect colonies
distributed throughout the solar system.
