This one is getting funny. The observation of the longest carbon nanotube (18.5 cm long)..." And that nanotube was the weakest thing I ever saw.
That has changed for Space Based Solar Power (SBSP). All components are now available at a scale of 20 MW per year and growing.
I wonder what sound the cable makes when a space elevator breaks???
Does anyone think a HTOL-Single Stage to Orbit, hydrogen/O2 burner might do the job better with available technologies.??? Atrex and Star-Raker demonstrate engines, we can wind carbon fiber to make very lightweight airframes over CNC carved X-aerogels, we can use some of those nice revamped Atlas rocket J5s for rocket boost on a winged LEO transport.
The restriction in height of skyscrapers is mainly due to elevator lift times and ya'll suggest that you can build now (short term or in any amount of time) an elevator to space. I am impressed with the lack of materials and manufacturing know how. Savvy?
Show me a 5 kilometer that is suspended straight up and I will personally build your space elevator. While a lunar elevator is possible to build it is not feasible compared to to a simple solar powered rail gun (mass driver).
SBSP mean Space Based Solar Power. The connotative thrust here is "Collect solar power in space and beam it down to the ground." Manufacturing said components for SBSP seems more likely than a start-up firm getting cash or stock offering for SE.
