,,,and the worst part is, we have lava tubes we could experiment with. If I had a few hundred thousand to play with, I would put a few engineers in a Biglow module in a lava tube and tell them to go as far as they can, solve as many problems on the ground as they can and note those problems that definitely need more research before we commit to a lunar insertion, Initially, our lunar stations will be receiving stuff from earth. We understand that but, it is also in the nature of people, especially those who have a financial involvement in the system, to reduce dependence on imports as much as possible. It's just going to take time to make a lunar station big enough and knowledgable enough to become self sustaining.

Agreed (at least about the Bigelow modules in lava tubes). There has
been surprisingly little research on finding the most suitable lava
tubes for habitation. I looked into it a few years back, and there are
certainly papers about lava tubes, but not as much useful data as you
might expect.

Hopefully the Google Lunar X Prize, if anyone actually manages to do it,
will spur some renewed interest in this sort of thing. But the clock on
that is ticking; I'm disappointed nobody has launched by now.

Best,
- Joe
