a disc (wheel) shaped magnet it's strong only on the faces; at the edges
it's very weak (and tries to keep flipping to stick down one of the
faces). But if the geometry keeps it from flipping or sliding off
track, perhaps it'd be enough to keep it from floating off.
Note too that we need at least the engine to be in good contact with the
track in order to receive power when the train starts. So again,
something to maintain this contact would be very helpful.
If magnets prove troublesome for this, an alternative would be a
roller-coaster or monorail-style track, with multiple wheels at each
point so the car can't derail. Perhaps one set of wheels are held in
place with springs, so the user can remove or replace the car without
having to disassemble the track. The devil's in the details, but I'm
sure a mechanical engineer would make short work of it.
