However, I think that one could build a cool variation of the Stanford Torus
with "safe skyscrapers" that would be cylinders *outside* the torus -
imagine a cylinder, then a torus touching the two hemispherical endcaps of
this first cylinder with its "west" edge, and then another cylinder in the
other side, with its hemispherical endcaps connected to the "east" edge of
the torus. If one of the cylinders is broken in the middle (by bombing,
impact event, whatever), then its pieces will "fall" in the open space
without extensive damage to the torus.
