To add to Tango's comments, what really needs to be
understood here is the concept of system engineering
and what it means to make reliable hardware. I've
recently been reading "The Secret of Apollo: Systems
Management in American and European Space Programs" by
Stephen B. Johnson (ISBN: 080186898X).

This is a great book for truly understanding how
projects are run in the space industry and he
describes alot of issues I've faced in my own career
in the commercial space industry to a tee. He talks
in detail about the evolution of how space
manufacturing has evolved to where it is now and why
it is as it is.

I'm only half way through the book but from what I've
read so far, I HIGHLY recommend it.
