Economic neccessity of space colonies

The problem I see with that approach is that you'll have pretty much no support
as the corporate world is probably not going to be able to do much without at
least some government support. Besides you're going to need a lot of activity
in space to be able to start space settlement. Far more then any company or
group of companies would be willing to spend.

After the development of space tourism it's more likely for companies to be
interested in space settlement but they're almost certain to be doing it with
government help or possibily even as part of a government program. I can't see
anyway of avoiding government involvment in space settlement and even if it
could be done I do doubt that the results would be as good.

We need to get into space as soon as we can. Or we go the way of the dinosuars
which if governments and the people who vote them in were rational would
probably unlimited funding to space settlement.
