I'd like to drop in on this "military vs civilians" issue.
I've known a lot of paramedics, police officers, medical personnel and so
on, all of whom would be officially called civilians but who are different
from civilians in a subtle but very important sense. I was an army brat and
I know that there is a civilian attitude, and there is a service attitude.
In that sense, I have no doubt that NASA astronauts, whatever their
background, have a service attitude. The fact that their job involves
putting their lives on the line may have something to do with it.
