Thanks Xenophile for your Aug 5 comments. Checked my M.E. handbook
for fiberglas being used in boat hulls/car bodies & runs 30000 to 50000 psi
tensil strength with density ~70% of Al alloys. Assuming we could find
some
with 25000 psi working stress we could build 500 meter dia. Bernal sphere
with 6" thick wall (based on 30 psi atmosphere design pressure).
Heppenheimer's "Colonies In Space" Island I dimensions of 125 meter
small (cross-section) diameter by 2.1 km major outside diameter. For
same 30 psi atmosphere design came out only requiring 1" thick wall !!
Maybe we should go back to Heppenheimer's torus shape which let
in reflected light through windows around inner surface of torus. They
proposed using stacked 'V' shaped chevron shields illustrated on pg 165.
