Plant Nursery In Space?

While on the topic of long range planning for ecosystem design, does
anyone know how to make soil from lifeless lunar dirt. Could someone
point me to any articles they know of?

How much time does it take for bacteria to spread through the dirt?
Do we need to launch a shuttle with earthworms as the man occupants:)

I'm wondering if we'll also need a huge compost heap out in space to
cultivate the topsoil that'll be needed for the habitat. Now if the
whole interior surface of the habitat is paved, tiled, etc, then
there'll probably be no need for grass, forests, etc, and then this
becomes a moot question.
