It was actually pretty good science for the most part. They only ran
into trouble when they had to replace part of the atmosphere... and
then lied about it. Had they simply admitted that there was still
lots to learn about maintaining a completely enclosed life support
system, and that they didn't have all the answers YET, it would still
be considered a good experiment.
