There is an old saw in the real estate market that there are three
characteristics that affect the value of property: location, location,
and location. Right now the orbital location is a little less valuable
than the most northern parts of Canada and Russia, i.e., close to 0.
Only better transportation can change that.

The materials in one asteroid (the largest ) are sufficient to make
orbital space colonies with ~500 times the surface area of the Earth in
usable real estate. See http://lifesci3.arc.nasa.gov/SpaceSettlement/
for details.
